Guide to entertainment and nightlife in Whistler, British Columbia

Whistler, British Colombia is well known for skiing and snowboarding, but it also has much to offer after the slopes have closed. You can fill your belly in one of over 90 restaurants that call Whistler home, relax with cocktails in one of the many lounges and bars, or dance the night away in one of the happening nightclubs.

When you’re fresh off the slopes and starving, Whistler’s restaurants can offer a wide variety of fares to please your palate. Bearfoot Bistro, known for fine French cuisine, has a wine collection of over 14,000 bottles ranging in price from $40 to $16,000. Their food and nightly live jazz acts are so popular that reservations are suggested. With a wide range of Japanese cuisine and a casual atmosphere, Sushi Village is a popular spot. Their sake margaritas are said to be legendary. Built at the same time as the village, Citta’s Bistro (pronounced cheetah) is one of the oldest eateries in Whistler. Locals love the large outdoor patio and the friendly atmosphere.

After your hunger for food is satisfied, head to the lounges and bars of Whistler to get together with friends to unwind. A local favorite and the only Irish pub, Dubh Linh Gate Pub has nightly live Celtic music. Black’s pub offers over 90 different beers and has a large outdoor patio to relax on while you enjoy them. Dusty’s Bar and Grill has been a popular hangout almost as long as Whistler has been around.

Whistler is a “pedestrian-only village.” This means that once you park your car, you won’t need it again until you are ready to leave because everything is within walking distance. Having everything within walking distance makes club hopping in Whistler so much safer and easier. Savage Beagle is a popular club best known for famous DJs and fresh squeezed juice martinis. The biggest nightclub in Whistler, Garfinkle’s is a musically diverse club offering VIP services. They offer private booths and private bars. With the largest dance floor and imported DJs from Europe and North America, Tommy Africa’s is always packed with locals and visitors. The music varies from techno and house to hip-hop and retro 80’s.

Even if you are dead-tired after full day of skiing and snowboarding, your trip to Whistler wouldn’t be complete unless you find the energy to experience the nightlife.

In the middle of winter, you may be dreaming of visiting a place that is much warmer and without any snow or fierce winds. If you want to do some traveling this winter, there are a few warm weather destinations that are not only popular with travelers, but also beautiful. Three travel destinations you should look into include Antigua, Perth, Australia, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, or Singapore.

Antigua is an island that is close to Bermuda. This island has many beaches for you to visit, water activities, and great food options. If you envision yourself relaxing on the beach, you should consider visiting Antigua. The average temperature is usually 80 degrees, which will make you forget about winter very quickly. Many people visit this island each year, so you will have the opportunity to meet new friends from all over the world. In addition to beautiful beaches, there are many hotels and resorts for you to stay in while on vacation.

If you don’t want to spend your winter vacations on an island, visit Perth, Australia. In addition to beaches, you will be able to drive to Sydney and see many historic buildings and enjoy the culture Australia has to offer. This is a great place to spend winter holidays because you will be able to shop, see a show, meet new people, and enjoy the ocean breezes. With surfing and other outdoor activities, you will never be bored.

Rio de Janeiro, which is located in Brazil, is the place to go if you want to visit the beach and enjoy the nightlife. With many activities including the legendary Carnival, you will be able to sample great food, listen to music, and soak in all the local color that Rio has to offer. This city is also a great place to sightsee with many religious statues and buildings to see. When you visit Rio, you will never want to leave. With 75 miles of beaches, you will be able to spend the day working on your tan and participating in the nightlife once the sun goes down.

Singapore has four official languages include Chinese, so you will definitely be able to learn more about the culture during your visit. With many small towns surrounding the city, you will never be bored. Relax and eat good food and meet interesting people from all over the world.

If you want to travel to a warmer place, but you don’t want to leave the US, how about traveling to Florida and visiting amusement parks and beaches. You can buy day passes to Disney World or Busch Gardens and enjoy rides and food. These vacations are a lot less expensive than a trip to an island or foreign land. Discover vacation spots that are closer to home when you want to get away from the cold weather.

Why Learn Spanish In Cusco, Peru

November 3, 2009 by admin

A few of my thoughts over my experience in Cusco to learn Spanish.

When you first arrive to this amazing city you’re initially blown away with the colonial and Quechua architecture, some of the best examples of the two cultures mixing (or should I say colliding?) in all of Latin America. Of course, it’s a Latin American city and like any good Latin America city there’s the incessant honking from the taxis and the exhaust fumes that can make you want to head for the hills but…good thing you can do just that!

I had arrived to Cursco to learn Spanish for 4 weeks and from the first day I knew there were lots of other things to do besides learn Spanish. On my walk to school in the morning I gazed down at the Plaza de Armas, over the tops of the buildings saying to myself that this city is breathtaking (literally! especially considering the altitude and the fumes from cars). Then as I turned to the corner I purchased for about .30 cents, two glasses of fresh-squeezed orange juice. I get it “to go,” meaning in a plastic baggie with a straw.

When I arrived to the school every morning ready to learn spanish, I would always find something new and interesting. The colorful textiles and the way the city is nestled into the surrounding mountains. Probably the most remarkable aspect of Cusco is its setting. You can easily escape the city and be on top of the world at Sacsayhuaman, pronounced Sexy Woman by gringo and local alike, in a mere 5 minutes. Up there you step back hundreds of years. You can take a horseback ride near the ruins or just stroll around taking in the impressive sites.

It takes a while to learn Spanish, after a week I was surprised to meet with students that had supposedly left Cusco but had fallen in love with the city and ended up staying much longer than just to learn Spanish. They said they’ve tried to leave several times but the city has seeped into their bones. This place is not just all alpacas and cuy (the delicacy of Cusco – fried guinea pig). This place is just plain old fun. With a nightlife that rivals the major capitals of Latin America, there is always something happening at night. Many of the bars and clubs stay open until 12:00…in the afternoon that is; great to learn Spanish, not! The relaxing couch bars offer jazz, some bars offer live music, most clubs have DJs and sweaty dance floors. On most nights in Cusco you can meet people from all over the world that are there to learn Spanish, tour and even Peruvians making our experience to learn Spanish much richer.

I would like to focus on some issue, even though I went to learn Spanish, that where completely different than in my home country. Forget culture shock, how about showers that shock! Not bad shocks, just quick nips. I learned to only touch the electrical tape after a few showers since they use electrical heating devices to warm the water. Also, don’t flush the toilet paper or in the case of the apartment I was in, you can’t flush the toilet …at least not without it making horrible shrieking whirly noises. The person in charge of my appartment had spent waiting for the plumber since last week to fix the toilet. He said the plumber had promised to come at 7pm. I guess they had meant 7pm some time in November after my deadline to learn Spanish in Cusco!!

At the same time, there is a lack of change in this city. I’ve been denied movie tickets when I tried to pay for a 10 sol flick with a 100 sol note. You can’t even think about getting into the taxi, which costs 2 soles, with anything bigger than a 5 sol coin. Even then you sometimes have to wait around while the taxi driver finds someone kind enough to change his coin. Having a 100 sol bill is usually like having no money at all. One time, having gone out with my classmates after we learn Spanish at the language school, I was buying a hat, and gave the señora a 50 sol note and then waited around for 15 minutes while she ran all over town to get my change. Other customers had come into the store and started asking me questions about merchandise. She had left me all alone to run her business, it was great to learn Spanish!

So…I drink my OJ from a plastic bag, I get into a shower that shocks me, still waiting to flush my toilet properly. All this you ask and I can still recommend this place with a smile? ABSOLUTELY, I wouldn’t trade the opportunity to learn Spanish here for anything!!!

Just remember, when you arrive to Peru and your first impressions are of Lima, this is NOT indicative of the rest of Peru. – Happy traveling and make sure you learn Spanish, it comes quite handy!

When we think of an exotic holiday, Brazil is one of the first destinations that come into our mind. Samba, hot beaches and the famous carnival are just a few of the images that cross our mind. Where can we find all these if not in Rio, the famous metropolis where everybody is always having fun? Rio de Janeiro or simply Rio, as the locals call it, holds many attractions for the tourists, including the beautiful scenery, the annual Carnival and the famous giant statue of Christ, “Cristo Redentor” (Christ the redeemer) recently elected, among other famous monuments, to be one of the New Seven Wonders of the modern world.

It is no wonder that the city has been named “A Cidade Maravilhosa” (the Marvelous City). Until 1960, Rio de Janeiro has been the capital of Brazil (after it had formerly been the capital of the Portuguese Empire). Today, although the capital has moved to Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro remains not only the second major city in southeastern Brazil, after Sao Paolo, but also an important cultural center.

The town was founded in the year 1565, on March 1, by the Portuguese knight called Estacio de Sa. Its full name was “Sao Sebastiano do Rio de Janeiro 20”, although today we use only the second half of the name. In case you wonder, the name meant “Saint Sebastian of the January 20th River” and the city was called so in the honor of Saint Sebastian, traditionally celebrated on January 20.

Today, with a population of about 12 million, Rio de Janeiro is one of the biggest cities in the world. Most of the population of the city is of Portuguese descent, but there are also a great number of African descendants. There is always something interesting to do or see in Rio. The beaches Copacabana and Ipanema are famous for their smooth sand, but also for the parties held here. In fact, if you are a fan of nightlife, Rio is the place to be. There are many clubs where you can party all night long, the most famous being Baronneti, Nuth and Catwalk. If you go into one of those clubs, chances are that you might meet your favorite star, as celebrities like Mick Jagger, Naomi Campbell, Ronaldo and Calvin Klein are said to visit these places.

The famous Carnival, which takes place every year 40 days before Easter, marking the beginning of Christian Lent, brings together people from all over the world. The traditional Samba dance, people in extravagant clothes enjoying themselves, good food and drinks are the things that you will find if you visit Rio this time of year. To find out more about the Carnival, read the information available on the Brazil travel forum. Another famous event is the New Year party held every year on the Copacabana beach, with fireworks and concerts, people dressed in white in the honor of the old Candomble tradition.

If you come to Rio during the carnival, you will surely leave with unforgettable memories. Rio is a wonderful place to visit, so if you have the opportunity, do not miss it. In order to find out more about Rio, accommodation, possibilities of studying or working in Brazil, Brazilian culture, traditional Brazilian food, or any other topic related to Brazil, you will find reliable information on our Brazil travel forum.

Lisbon golf holidays

I have returned last month from a familirisation visit for Lisbon Golf Holidays

I was really impressed with all the courses. Firstly though, I had the pleasure in staying at the fabulous Sesimbra Hotel and Spa. A great 4 star hotel, situated on the beach with stunning views of the Atlantic and beach front at Sesimbra. Its about 45-55 minutes from Lisbon Airport. The drive isn’t the best and the hotel is a bit tricky to find in the one way system, but its worth. Good food in the restaurant as well…. highly recommended…..

I played golf at Aroeira I and Aroeira II. Aroeira Golf Breaks are available and are a really good choice. The accommodation is self catering style apartments (although you can include a decent enough breakfast at the clubhouse each day for a small fee). The apartments are basic, but perfectly good enough for small families and groups of golfers.

The only issue is the lack of nightlife and you definitely need a car for the trip. Nearby is Caprica de Charneca – a traditional portugese village/town with a couple of very good and well priced restaurants.

Lisbon is about 40 by cab (so between 4 its pretty accessible). Good nightlife in Lisbon….. Say no more.

The courses at Aroeira are excellent. My preference is Aroeira II with great use of the trees and water.

The 18th is a great finishing hole:

Par 5 with Water running down the right and then around the green on the left – too much greed off the tee can put you in the drink, but its a really good risk reward hole.

Aroeira I is a lovely track as well, but perhaps slightly less featured than II, having said that, stroke index 2 11th is superb

Long Par 4 with a green protected by bunkers and a lake alongside it. Dont be long (as I found out to my cost – impossible up and down).

Further inland from Aroeira is the delightful Quinta Do Peru a cracking little track with a good club house. The 15th and 16th are great signature holes.

About an hours drive from Aroeira is Troia, what a course. A links style track with tiny greens and big bunkers, brilliant golf course – very tough. Its pretty unique as you have to take a ferry from Setubal to the peninsula. I was lucky enough to be making the journey when the local family of dolphins were pklaying in the water alongside the boats – to be honest I should have stoppped there and had a swim because my golf was unbelieveably bad!

Troia golf course – watch out for the dolphins!

I was really impressed with Southern Lisbon for your golf holiday, great venues and superb golf courses. The important thing for me though, was that it is still Portugal – traditional bars and good seafood. With Flights becoming more accessible to Lisbon I highly receommend your next golfing trip there!

Travel destinations: Montevideo, Uruguay

Montevideo, the capital city of Uruguay offers travelers sun, culture, shopping and nightlife without charging a fortune. Here are some highlights about this hidden gem of a destination:

When to go: The southern hemisphere offers a bit of sun when its chilly up north. Careful, the Uruguayan summer months can get hot and muggy. Choose Jan – March for the mildest beach bathing weather.

How to get there: The airport is about 15 minutes outside of town and is easily accessible by cab. If you are traveling to other Uruguayan cities, the BuqueBus boat system may also be an option. In early 2009, the cheapest fares from the US were offered by AmericanAirlines at ~$800 US.

Where to stay: This author recommends the “Hotel Tryp Montevideo”. Situated close to beaches, shopping and the bus station, this hotel boasts a rooftop deck where you can watch the sun go down over the city. The staff are friendly and will offer you a special Uruguayan drink of white wine and champage upon arrival.

History: Montevideo has an “Old town” section and a “New Town” section. Visit the Old town section for tours of the pier and other historical happenings. In short, Montevideo got its start as a strategic military post in the early 1700s and has grown into an important cultural center and seaport over the centuries. Compared to Argentina or Rome, Montevideo lacks historical tourist points, but a solid day can be spent learning about the beginnings of this busy city.

Shopping: Antique dealers pedal their wares in various sqares throughout the city. The Mercado del Puerto also offers handicrafts of the region along with little restaurants for snacking and picking up meals on the go.

Nightlife: The city offers dancing throughout the night at several locations. This author recommend the “W” – a three story building with both and interior and exterior section. They are well secured and play all types of music. We danced the night away until the club closed at 5am. The club opens at midnight, so head across the street to the small restaurants there for a great pizza and a pitcher of Sangria!

Walking: Take walking tours whenever you can! This town is very easily traversed with a good pair of walking shoes. This author recommends both TripAdvisor and Lonely Planet suggested tours. Watch out for dog poop – the city has quite a population of homeless dogs who havent learned to use the public restrooms.

Beaches: As you drive into town, you will notice every kind of beach activity from volleyball

Travel The Amazon River In Luxury

October 25, 2009 by admin

The Amazon River, the second longest river in the world, flows through some of the most pristine environment in the world and is home to myriad native bird and animal species. Savvy travelers are aware that luxury travel is available for experiencing this unique ecosystem and creating unforgettable memories.

Hear the word cruise and frequent travelers automatically picture an ocean-going vessel ready to carry thousands of passengers along the most scenic waters of the world. But those accustomed to luxury travel are well aware that some of the best cruises in the world are taken on mighty rivers like the Nile, the Danube, the Mississippi and, of course, the Amazon. The Amazon is the second longest river in the world and empties into the Atlantic Ocean along the coast of Brazil. While other rivers feature cruises on smaller vessels, the Amazon is massive enough in width and depth to support some of today’s luxury cruise ships. A number of cruise lines with five-star reputations, like Crystal, Holland America, and Silversea to name a few, provide regular itineraries that include the Amazon River.

For travelers who are looking for eco-friendly ways to visit remote areas of the planet, what better way to leave a negligible footprint than to visit pristine rainforest areas by ship? Cruise passengers experience the jungle environment with minimal disruption to native habitat, while they enjoy all the first-class accommodations and amenities that the best cruise ships have to offer.

The major cruise lines that sail the Amazon River provide unique shore activities at several local stops. Travelers can enjoy a wide variety of jungle and wildlife tours either on foot or via motorized vehicles. These stops occur at remote native villages where the ambience of the spot is truly authentic, not just an artificial place recreated for tourist entertainment. The Amazon rainforest is one of the few remaining places in the world to experience nature in its original form. Add this destination to your travel itinerary if you wish to experience unspoiled rainforest before civilization creeps in.

For an even closer view of the Amazon River and its environs, consider taking a luxury class riverboat cruise where the Amazon is the only destination. Adventurous travelers can spend nearly two weeks aboard a luxury craft exploring the remote reaches of the exotic Amazon River amongst some 600 species of native birds plus all kinds of other wildlife. For those seeking eco-travel, these cruises offer unparalleled opportunities to visit the Patanal wetlands, the largest wetland in the world and home to the Caiman Ecological Refuge.

For the most remote Amazon adventure, consider a luxury riverboat cruise that originates in Peru and sails the upper Amazon. Visualize a small ship that pampers just 12 passengers with a crew of 14 to see to their every need. This cruise includes the services of naturalists who are available to locate and interpret the unique ecosystem of the upper Amazon. Naturalists guide travelers on personal tours in small boats into the remote Amazon estuaries and the Pacaya Samiria Reserve, a protected rainforest area established by the Peruvian government in 1982 with over 5 million acres.

It is important to remember that cruising on the Amazon River takes travelers to a remote and undeveloped area of the world. What are considered luxury standards on the Amazon do not necessarily compare to luxury standards of major cruise lines or five-star resorts. It’s important to use the services of a qualified and experienced travel consultant to insure that you do business with a reputable travel company in the area. Five-star luxury travel is readily available in Brazil for those who know where to find it. Of course, Rio de Janeiro, the departure point for some river cruises, is one of the top luxury travel destinations in the world, renowned for first-class shopping, dining, accommodations, culture and nightlife.
