Getting In and Around Cartagena

Eventually the city became a major export center as well, for precious metals, spices and other South American goods. Today, the city offers a dizzying Array of exotic beaches, public parks, museums, restaurants and unparalleled nightlife.

Situated on Colombia’s northern coast, Cartagena is the country’s most highly touristed city. High season times include the December holidays (holy week between Christmas and New Year’s Day) and the month of August, which is when most Colombians take their vacations.

The favorite spot in Cartagena of international tourists is usually the walled colonial city, known as ciudad amurallada, which is home to high-end guest accommodations, restaurants and clubs. The other popular spot among tourists is Bocogrande, a mile-long strip along the beach of high-rise hotels and exclusive accommodations, cafes, bars, restaurants and discotheques.

Getting to Cartagena

Cartagena is located about 1000 km north of Bogota, so most visitors chose to arrive by air. You can either take a direct flight from Miami or you can transfer through the Colombian capital of Bogota. The flight from Miami is about 2.5 hours, and it is an hour from Bogota. The Cartagena airport is called Rafael Nunez and is a fully international airport.

A more exotic method of transportation into Cartagena is charter boat. If you have been vacationing in Panama, you can hire a charter boat to Cartagena, as this city is a port for charter traffic between the two countries. These charters are usually extremely small (no more than family of four can comfortably be accommodated) sailboats with one crew member. The trip can take up to five days, depending on weather and stops along the way. Fares vary between US$200-US$500 and include food, usually fresh seafood caught along the journey.

Getting Around Cartagena

As with most vacation destinations, the best way to get around Cartagena is to walk. This is especially true of the city’s ciudad amurallada, or walled colonial (inner) city. For destinations slightly beyond walking distance, such as the San Felipe fort, visitors can take a public bus or a taxi. While taxis are usually easy to find in Cartagena, they are much less common in the old city center. Be prepared to walk a few blocks to a more trafficked road.

Another popular transportation option is to take a horse-drawn chariot. There are several companies offering this service, with sales booths set up through the old city. You will usually find at least one waiting chariot at the Plaza Bolivar, or you can ask your guest accommodation to assist with reservations.

If you are interested in taking a day boat trip, Cartagena has several options. The various harbors throughout the city offer day excursions to the Islas del Rosario and Playa Blanca. Tourists generally find that the ferryboat to Playa Blanca is perfect for a day at the beach. On Sundays, the city also offers a direct bus service.

Travelling Around Murcia Spain

The Autonomous Province of Murcia in Spain is easily found on the map because it touches borderlines with Alicante on the Costa Blanca passing through Torrevieja and you will know that you are in the region of Murcia because you will be surprised by the beautiful scenery of the salt swamps at San Pedro del Pinatar. Its capital city has the same name as the province and within its boundaries, it has a sea or lagoon called the Mar Menor ( or small sea) separated from the Mediterranean by the so called Manga, a sandy stretch of land which looks like a sleeve ( literal translation of the Spanish word manga). It then curves around a peak and the all so important city of Cartagena comes into view and lastly, when you are almost leaving this province you have a fantastic beach resort area and city called Aguilas. This Spanish region has got very hot summers, many a day reaching temperatures as high as 40 degrees and the winters are mild and short. It is usually described as having a very arid landscape on the inlands but has managed to be known to have fertile land for growing vegetables and legumes.

There is evidence that Mursiya, as it was called when it was an Islamic city, dates back to 831 AD when it was founded by Abderraman II. It had suffered and had lost a lot of prestige, but made a come back with the arab domain, becoming the capital in the basin of the Segura River.

Let’s get to Murcia and then we’ll see

Either a quick flight into the airport of San Javier which is about a 30 minutes drive from the city of Murcia right near the Manga in the Mar menor or flying into the Alicante airport of the Altet, about a 40 minutes drive to the city, your hotel will be awaiting you. As every visit requires, we will soak up some architecture and culture before delving into the modern day happening, nightlife and good food.

The Cathedral, dating back between the 14th and the 18th century is a potpourri of more than five centuries of different styles of architecture; the Baroque carved art on the front door of Pardon, the Gothic Chapel of Velez, The Renaissance Chapel called Junteron and the emblematic Tower measuring 96 metres tall with 25 bells.

The Sanctuary of Fuensanta ( the good saint ) from the 18th century found on the outskirts, is the patron saint of Murcia. The slender figure of this saint is carried around in a procession from the sanctuary to the cathedral among a very devote crowd at Easter and during the Murcia festival in summer.

The Museum of Science and Water is an interactive one installed together with the Segura River and has been developed around the idea of water, an important and vital element in our everyday lives. There is a kids’ planetarium, the Science Square where experiments are demonstrated, modules of perception, temporary exhibitions and thematic shows.

Party time and good food in Murcia

There are two great festivities which have been declared of national touristic interest so that your visit to Murcia could be greatly highlighted, During Easter week with the processions and Easter Sunday, and the Spring festivals. In the summer there are all kinds of music festivals and this year 2005, the XI edition of the Sea of Music festival will be held from July 1st to the 23rd in Cartagena.

There are two special countries which will be present, Turkey on July 15th with Mercan Dede and othrs and Brazil with special artists like Chico Cesar and Ray Lema on the 16th. But if you miss it this year, you know that it is held every year!

The Murcia region has one of the best irrigated lands for cultivating vegetables and legumes. This can be tasted if trying kale slowly fried in olive oil, rice with kidney beans, spinach and chick pea stew and the most popular of all – meat pie. Having the sea nearby, they also make good use of the angler or sea bass as well as exquisite prawns and crawfish. To accompany such fine cuisine, some wine from either Jumilla, a red wine from Bullas or a rose from Yecla. And to finish off, sweets made from fruit.

But do not be lazy and take a drive in your car rental and head for the beaches in the Manga, where incredible luxury hotels and golfing resorts are at your full availablitity. Or further up the coast, enjoying the Costa Blanca of Alicante and maybe a quick spin to Calpe, you can make your holiday stay to Murcia complete.

The other is the quiet seaside resort Kijkduin and is worth visiting. A romantic walk on the beach, followed by a nice meal in one of the small restaurants on the boulevard. Or, if you feel like doing something a bit more active, a bracing walk or cycle tour in the dunes.

Grand Prix Drivers Do Monaco

Watch out in that passing lane; zipping along past you may be a Formula 1 driver on his way home!

The Grand Prix season over for this year, drivers have spread out to the four corners of the globe for some R & R. Home sweet home for many drivers is still Monaco. Different ports of call beckon others home.

Recently, British driver Lewis Hamilton announced his decision to move to Switzerland. What led to the decision? Some might surmise it’s tax-related. Certainly, it’s an attractive option for the wealthy. Although he has stated he’s moving there to escape the extraordinary amount of public and media attention he receives in Britain, life in the fast lane needs slowing down sometimes.

Monaco remains the premiere spot to call home for the Grand Prix drivers of the F1 circuit. It contains the district of Monte Carlo with its famous casino, first-class hotels, and leisure facilities for the jet-set crowd. Is it any wonder that it’s a favourite spot for these elite drivers? They can unwind from a gruelling season and still get up-to-speed when they choose; enjoying the exotic nightlife in this country.

Who lives in Monaco when they’re not traipsing the world’s finest F1 courses? Here’s a who’s who:

* British driver Jenson Button
* German driver Nico Rosberg
* Alex Wurz of Austria, who just recently announced his retirement
* David Coulthard of Britain
* Felipe Massa of Brazil
* Giancarlo Fisichella of Italy

Each May, Monaco hosts its own Grand Prix race. It’s one of the most prestigious stops on the Grand Prix tour with a rich history behind it. The first race ran in 1929. The Monaco Grand Prix is one-third of the Triple Crown of Motorsport. The other two are the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 hours of Le Mans. All three display drivers at the top of their game on courses known to test the limits of endurance and technical driving skills.

As the Grand Prix circuit winds its way from continent to continent, it certainly speaks of Monaco’s charm that many drivers end up there at season’s end. This resort by-the-sea offers entertainment, tax breaks and respite from the F1 circuit.

What an F1 circuit it has been this year. It began in March of 2007 in Australia and ended in October in Brazil. The circuit passed through the Middle East, Europe, North America, Japan and China. Time spent in Monaco, after it’s all said and done, seems like what the doctor ordered.

This small country, with just over 32,000 people, is the second smallest independent state after the Vatican. According to former F1 driver, Johnny Herbert of Britain, most Grand Prix drivers live in Fontvieille. This is prime real estate; a fabricated harbour built in the 1970’s in Monaco. The country itself is roughly the size of New York City’s Central Park.

Although the primary reason for the well-paid Grand Prix drivers to live here is taxes – the lack thereof- there has to be more to it than that. If it were just that, they’d all live in Switzerland or the Bahamas or offshore on a tugboat (albeit a very luxurious one).

You have to believe there’s more to it than the monetary savings. You would think the racing history of this principality lures drivers in; Grand Prix drivers having racing oil in their blood. Sure, they also have a taste for the finer things in life which Monaco offers. Nevertheless, there’s a history here. The greats of F1’s of the past have left their stamp in Monaco.

The Circuit de Monaco holds onto the memories of greats like Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost and Jackie Stewart. These were stalwarts of the sport who won on the course multiple times. It also doesn’t forget the likes of Niki Lauda, Jody Sheckter and all the others who have won here.

There’s racing history tucked in this parcel of land between the Alps and the Mediterranean Sea. Grand Prix drivers know that and it’s not hard to understand why so many of them are here.

6 Things Foreign Study Students Should Do When in Buenos Aires

If you’re attending a language school in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina, congratulations, you have made a great selection for a total immersion foreign language study experience. Buenos Aires is a large modern city of approximately 3 million people and is referred to as the “Paris of South America” for its intimate elegance and European architectural influences. A top destination for foreign study abroad students internationally, Buenos Aires is a city of great sights and once in a lifetime experiences.

Learning about the culture of this beautiful and gracious city is a key part to understanding some of the more intimate nuances present within Argentine Spanish. For the first-time foreign study student, the list of activities and historical sites to see may at first appear overwhelming. The following seven activities will go a long way in ensuring that your first visit to the Capital Federal is a truly fulfilling experience that touches on the best of what Buenos Aires and Argentine culture has to offer.

1. LEARN TO DANCE THE TANGO – Argentina and Buenos Aires are famous as the home of the sultry dance known as the tango. There are tango performances daily in the city, tango-themed restaurants, even private or group tango lessons so you can experience this Latin special folk dance for yourself. Each year on the 11th of December, the city holds its annual Tango day when the roots of the dance are celebrated by residents. The Tango is intimately Buenos Aires and its cadence is worth experiencing during any upcoming visit.

2. VISIT MUSEUMS – Many fine museums are located in the city. The Argentina National Museum of History celebrates the history of Argentina, particularly items related to the May Revolution and to the Argentine War of Independence. The Metropolitan National Cathedral is the main Catholic church in the city, originally constructed in 1753. A separate mausoleum contains the tomb of Jose de San Martin, Argentina’s greatest hero. The National Museum of Fine Arts contains one of the most substantial art collections in the entire continent. Currently on display is the renown 20th Century Latin American Art showcase, the Malba-Costantini Collection.

3. BOTANICAL GARDENS AND ZOO – Containing over 5,500 species of vegetables and almost 70,000 square meters of vegetation designed by French landscape architect Carlos Thays. Several garden styles, including a recreation of the garden of Pliny the Younger, a Japanese Garden and a symmetrical French designed garden are all available for viewing. Nearby Buenos Aires Zoo contains over 2,500 species of animals. The mission statement of the Buenos Aires Zoo is to encourage patrons not only to learn about the specific species represented in the enclave, but to view and understand man’s wider role as a custodian of the environment.

4. DINING & NIGHTLIFE – The Plaza de Mayo is an ideal place to start a restaurant tour of Buenos Aires. Situated among the old trees and architecture of Avendina de May, many bars, coffeehouses and restaurants lie to the west of the plaza waiting to be explored. Dozens of fine restaurants allow for dining equivalent to the ambiance you would see in most European capitols. Among them, the Cabana Las Lilas, a premier Argentine steakhouse located in the neighborhood of Puerto Madero. Their cuisine includes the presence of tender and succulent Argentine beef as well as a variety of native and ethnic dishes available for order. Like Paris, Buenos Aires has a large and thriving nightlife scene. The Casablanca, within the neighborhood of San Telmo, is a great Tango nightspot and should not be missed.

5. VISIT THE OPERA – The Opera house in Buenos Aires, the Teatro Colon, is one of the most famous in the world. The performances by the singers are second to none. Be sure you schedule time to spend an evening viewing one of there performances. The opera house was built in the 1908 after twenty years of construction by famed architect Fancesco Tamburini, and has been providing unparalleled music ever since. The quality of the music and the performances here compare favorably with those from the finest European opera houses.

6. ENJOY AN AFTERNOON OF SPORTS – Argentineans take their sports very seriously. Soccer is a sport played by children and adults alike and by those in every segment of society. While no one pretends to think that playing soccer will teach you the Spanish language, spending a Sunday afternoon with a group of friends playing an impromptu game will certainly give you a better understanding of the culture of Argentina as well as a grasp of the more “flavoral” words that make up the Argentine dialect.

Travel to Buenos Aires is a once in a lifetime event. Good food, intoxicating sights and sounds and a vibrant nightlife are just a few of the many benefits that await the foreign Spanish student in Argentina. With an extremely favorable 3:1 exchange rate between the US Dollar and the Argentine Peso, there has never been a more favorable time for foreign study students to make the trip, what are you waiting for?

Ronaldinho, football genius of Barcelona

One of the players most associated with Joan Laporta’s renaissance of FC Barcelona is Ronaldo de Assis Moreira from Brazil, better known to the world simply as Ronaldinho, sometimes as Gaucho, or affectionately just as plain Ronnie.

Brought to Barcelona in 2003 by Laporta’s then ally and right hand man, Vice-president Sandro Rosell, Ronaldinho quickly established himself in the hearts and minds of Barcelona’s supporters – known as “culés” – with a combination of unmatched skill with the ball, daring attacks on the goal, and a manner that showed above anything else that win or lose, he just loved playing football.

After several years of indifferent results Barcelona started to regain its confidence and by the end if the 2003-2004 season were back in full swing, finished in second place in the league behind Valencia, with attendances at the Nou Camp growing with each match.

Ronaldinho was born in Porto Alegre in Brazil in 1980 and honed his skills as a child playing indoor and beach football. Aged just 13 he came to the attention of the local media when he scored all the goals in a victory against a local team. When you learn that Ronaldinho’s team won 23-0 you get some idea of how impressive a feat that was.

His first team as a professional player was Grêmio in 1998, which his older brother, Roberto, had played for earlier – his own football career was cut short through injury and he eventually became the manager of Ronaldinho instead.

With his magic touch of the ball and a clear ability to score, Ronaldinho was snapped up by the Brazilian squad in 1999 and was clear interest from a number of big-name European clubs, Ronaldinho signed with Paris Saint-Germain in 2001.

Whether he was unhappy in Paris, or enjoying the nightlife too much as manager Luis Fernandez claimed is unclear, but for whatever reason he was unable to produce the on-pitch pyrotechnics that he is famous for and by 2003 Ronaldinho made it clear that he was looking to move on.

Both FC Barcelona and Manchester United went after him, but when Manchester and Paris Saint-Germain were unable to agree transfer terms the way was clear for FC Barcelona to get the Brazilian’s signature.

The first match with his new club was against AC Milan in an exhibition match in Washington DC while on a pre-season summer tour of the United States. Scoring in the 51st minute, Ronaldinho continued to impress and became a firm favourite with fans due to his magical ball control and a remarkable attitude that always seemed to see him smiling whether he scored or not.

In addition to his contribution to two La Liga championships and one Champions League trophy, Ronaldinho also has a collection of awards in his own right – FIFA World Player of the Year on two occasions and European Footballer of the Year once.

Vacation rentals all over the world

September 30, 2009 by admin

Which is the number one rule that we all obey, actually pretty enthusiastically, when we finally reach that period of the year when vacation comfortably settles in or when some blessed holiday gives us the occasion to relax for a short while? That rule tells us something which, rephrased, sounds like this: do it, but only do it as long as you have fun. In other words, with vacation knocking at your door, we can only think one thing: “I surely deserve some quality spare time which I can spend together with my family.” So why not spoil yourself with the relaxed, secure and comfortable experience of vacation rentals?

A holiday or a well-earned vacation is not supposed to cause you supplementary reasons to worry about booking rooms in expensive hotels, about the crowd which usually floods hotels or about minutely preparing all the equipment for what could turn out to be an uncomfortable camping trip. Instead, arranging such accommodations as vacation rentals might just realize your dream escape. The first, most important thing to do is to park yourself comfortably in front of your PC and start browsing the web for online holiday rentals or vacation rentals and related services providers. One good tip is to use the assistance of a specialized vacation rentals site, like http://www.arkadia.com, which will provide information about the best places which offer vacation rentals. After taking a look at the rich supply of holiday rentals or vacation rentals, the decision belongs to you. You can choose from the many vacation rentals as they are numerous and attractive.

It all depends on what holiday rentals your heart is set on. Would you like to visit far-off places, which you only heard about in movies or read about in books? Or would you rather spend your free time in a place eagerly recommended by some good friend or relative? Either way, vacation rentals are equal to safe, cosy, reliable accommodations which allow you to get to know new places while still guarding some of that precious, familiar atmosphere of an authentic home. A virtual holiday rentals provider, like Arkadia, will help you browse through a huge number of available vacation rentals throughout the world and find the best vacation rentals available.

Do you dream about visiting one of those famous tropical paradises set in the middle of an ocean? In that case, you may want to pick the vacation rentals offered by a country like the Seychelles. Situated North of Madagascar, the archipelago includes more than 100 islands, one more beautiful than the other. Islands like Mahe, Cousin Island or La Digue come among the top selections of tropical “wonderlands” fans. Holiday rentals are effortlessly obtainable on an island such as Mahe, the biggest one of the Seychelles, which displays an impressive number of almost seventy beaches bordering a dominating, interior mountain range. The island additionally combines the rough country of the mountains with the advantages offered by a civilized capital, Victoria, by the fact that the majority of the Seychelles population is settled on the Mahe Island. However, your thirst for rare beauty may certainly be quenched by the landscape offered by La Digue, an island untouched by the hand of progress for years and years and where tours in ox-carts will make you wonder at the unworldly exquisiteness of the surroundings and of houses built in a traditional manner. After a day’s sightseeing you and your family will return exhausted, speechless, but satisfied to one of the holiday rentals you chose, experiencing – for the extent of your vacation – how it actually feels to feel like home in the middle of tropical magnificence.

Yet there is excellence in other places as well. Instead of tropical paradises, you may be drawn to Europe’s displays of wonders (because there is spectacle within continental landscapes also). Vacation rentals are widely available in the Array of countries, cities and villages you can spend your vacation in. France, for example, will attract you with, of course, the dashing avenues of its capital, with expeditions to the renowned chateaux of Loire, with a mind-boggling number of kinds of cheese, with croissants and fine wines pairing off de la crème brulee. Just imagine choosing one of the holiday rentals which offer you the chance of living the French way, even if only for the period of your leisure time. Or maybe you feel like trying some of the German scenery: gothic churches, meticulously planned small villages, renowned medieval houses which will offer you strategic holiday rentals from where you can leave in the morning, after a hearty breakfast, and to where you can return in the evening as to your own home. After that, in the big cities, like Berlin, you can go out to take the pulse of night entertainment. Walk on Hohe Strasse in the multifarious Cologne, enjoy the intellectual, artistic, yet modern air of Dresden and give it a go to the errands dreamland and gorgeous castles of Munich, knowing that close by mountains and mountainous lakes form an incredible panorama. Moreover, crossing the Channel, you can go to England, select one of the holiday rentals there and then go see the cosmopolitan capital on the Thames. If you prefer smaller cities, after finding some holiday rentals there, you can see places like Cambridge or Brighton. One of the holiday rentals will wait you back like your own house.

Crossing the Atlantic, vacation rentals are numerous as well. Canada has amazingly natural sceneries in its Northern areas, in the middle of which your choice (out of the many holiday rentals) will retain the feeling of home. Still in Canada, Alberta, with its friendliness and openness surely has some vacation rentals on the map. Holiday rentals are many in French flavoured Quebec also. If the northern part of the American continent doesn’t satisfy you, there are holiday rentals in Central and South America as well. Arkadia Holidays lets you know that, for instance, Argentina may also offer holiday rentals. Enjoy Buenos Aires cosmopolitanism and nightlife, some specific Argentinean passion for soccer and imbue yourself with Buenos Aires elegance. Get ready to see one of them or more, if your free time is more generous, and get ready to find out about a greater number of countries you deserve to visit.

Vacation Bookings for 2008 From Ireland to Overseas Destinations

September 28, 2009 by admin
Filed under Nightlife

The Irish are already booking their holiday spots for 2008, and they are putting down deposits for their summer holidays to places such as Majorca and villa holidays in Menorca, the Canary Islands, and other places located across the Mediterranean, as well as South America. It seems that with unreliable weather conditions in Ireland during the summer months, residents would prefer to go out of the country for their holidays.

No More Weather Worries

When weather conditions made a turn for the worse in the summer of 2007, many Irish residents tried to book holidays to different locations overseas. Because many of the package deals were already booked, however, they were stuck at home. So that won’t happen again, they are booking their holidays early for peace of mind. Now they have better choices of accommodation, along with guaranteed flights.

Holiday Hot Spots for the Irish

Most Ireland residents are also very concerned when it comes to environmental issues. For this reason, they are choosing holiday destinations that are eco-friendly and also offer kids options for having fun. To this end, the hot spots that are being booked early this year include:

Madagascar: This destination proves a favorite among kids! The wildlife is unmatched in any other place in the world. Madagascar teems with unusual plant life that is a wonder to behold. You can go whitewater rafting down obscure rivers, stroll sandy white beaches, trek up mountains, and even spelunk through caves infested with crocodiles.

Guatemala: This country has more than 19 different ecosystems that are sometimes separated only by small rivers. Guatemala has its own unique varieties of flora and fauna, as well, which are a sight to see. Because of its diversity, Guatemala offers many opportunities for outdoor adventures, including:

* Fishing
* Caving
* Horseback Riding
* Hang Gliding
* Mountain Trekking
* Volcano Climbing
* Bird-watching
