As a frequent traveler to Lima over the past decade, the changes in this metropolitan city have been great and far-reaching. After dealing with domestic terrorism and political corruption, Peru, and Lima in particular, has blossomed into one of the premiere destination cities in South America.

A visit to Lima begins in the affluent Miraflores district, where you can start with a trip to the upscale Larco Mar center. In addition to a number of high-end stores, you can dine at a Tony Roma’s, Hooter’s, Pardo’s Chicken or Mangos Restaurant. Many of these restaurants offer views of the city and the ocean. When walking along the top floor of Larco Mar, you’re treated to a breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean.

Across the street from Larco Mar is the Marriott Hotel, one of the many skyscrapers that now dot the Lima skyline. It’s also the home of one the many casinos in Lima. You’ll find casinos of varying sizes throughout Lima, with many of the high-end casinos like Atlantic City and Golden Palace, rivalling casinos you would find in Las Vegas.

Along the coasts in Lima, you’ll find a number of beaches, which can be quite crowded during the summer time. Many of these beaches feature bayside restaurants who bring out the food to you on the beach! You can stop in, place your order for a plate of calamari with yuca then return to the beach. A few minutes later, as you’re lounging, a waiter will bring out your order!

Lima is also the launching point for many of Peru’s world-famous attractions. From Lima, you can take a 90-minute flight to see the Nazca Lines (or for a lower fare, take a bus to Ica or Nazca, then take a shorter flight). Of course, the other must-see is Machu Picchu, which begins with a 90-minute flight to Cuzco. Due to Cuzco’s high altitude, you should rest the first day in Cuzco, before trekking to Machu Picchu.
